Some people are concerned about the narrowing of #BeachAveBikeway in some sections and the abrupt change of lane width caused by the pedestrian bump-outs at some crossings. Hopefully the CoV will address the potential for crashes with signage and road markings. The improvements +
…address 3 key objections to the bike lane: 1. pedestrian safety and convenience (which were already actually much better with 2 lanes of cars instead of 4). When some cyclists fail to stop at pedestrian crossings and red lights, some people get justifiably upset. So the +
…pedestrian bump outs will help to encourage cyclists to give way to pedestrians. 2nd, transit accessibility. Once 2-way traffic is restored between Denman and Jervis, the No. 23 bus will be able to resume its original route to Jervis then continue to Pacific, only one block +
…removed from its original route between Jervis and Howe. This is really good for elderly and disabled transit users who currently have to walk to and from Davie for the eastbound route. This removes another valid concern. +
3rd, resumption of 2-way traffic between Denman and Jervis will reduce inconvenience for drivers, but will have the added benefit of forcing speed reduction because there’ll be one lane in either direction instead of 2 westbound lanes which encourage overtaking at speed. +
Beach Ave west of Denman Street and the section under Burrard Bridge are actually wider for cyclists post-improvements. It looks to me like the CoV have maintained a minimum width for the bike lane with the exception of the pedestrian bump-outs, which is positive. +
So we
win some and we lose some with the improvements in progress, but overall we win because addressing the concerns people have about #BeachAveBikeway makes it more likely that we will be able to keep it permanently, which is the bigger picture we need to focus on.

Here’s the map of the improved bus route. Hopefully they’re adding another stop at Vancouver House (Howe St) as it’s a bit too far between stops eastbound after Thurlow in my view… https://twitter.com/lucyincanada/status/1341911945494970369
