now we all know txt virtually have no bad song and their discography is a plethora of diverse and unique bangers, so it’s very hard to rank songs. but objectively, production wise and sonically, i believe rollercoaster is ᵖʳᵒᵇᵃᵇˡʸ txt’s best track and let me get into why
right off the bat – the old school percussion & record scratching? IN LOVE. rollercoaster as a whole has 90s, throwback and nostalgic vibe because of its uk garage sound (and boy i love me a garage beat)
the production really mirrors what this song is all about – a rollercoaster of emotions – as the beat changes in pace from the mid paced verses, to the slower build up of the prechoruses (the uphill slopes) and the fast paced, upbeat chorus (aka the drops on the ride)
syncopated beats/percussion are characteristic of garage music, and in rollercoaster’s case the way the chorus kicks in slightly off time & little things like the hi-hats ticking (if you pay attention to the left side sound/left earphones) all add to that playful “offbeat” vibe
the synths & the piano throughout give the song a funfair ride or retro arcade game vibe... this video is the best visual representation of the feeling you get while listening to rollercoaster
in addition, a lot of “space” is created in the production, as the sound is very engulfing. the harmonies, breathiness and echoing of the layered vocals make you feel like you’re suspended way up in the air on a rollercoaster at night – just as the title & lyrics suggest
the bridge is the highlight of the song: to compare it to a rollercoaster journey, it would be the middle of the ride when it slows down or plateaus before getting to the “finale” of the ride or the last big drop (aka the last chorus)
... and we reach the end of the ride, aka the rollercoaster journey, as the beat reels in & mellows out. the harmonies, the chanting of “so itchy” and soobin’s falsetto are the cherry on top & ending killing points that leave you wanting more – to ride the rollercoaster again
overall rollercoaster is such a fun & brilliant track that perfectly captures the lyrics in its musical presentation. it’s always been up there in my txt song rankings and it only gets better and better with every listen. and if txt ever manage to top it... good luck charlie
