Before I go tonight I want to answer a question posed by somebody a few days ago.
Sikhs (though I can no longer call myself one) do celebrate the values of Christmas. Peace, goodwill, love of fellow man, charity - these are universal values. /1

Our family (and other families we know) always have a tree, send cards, give presents. If Christian belief doesn't enter into it, the values Christianity shares with other religions do. /2
My oldest brother is married to an Irishwoman. His (almost adult) children were baptised Catholic. Dad and Mum love those children to bits. The next brother is married to a white Englishwoman. He remains Sikh (but without the trimmings) and she an Anglican. /3
My next brother, Manny, is (perhaps without being fully aware of it) engaged to a lovely white English girl. Neither are religious.
It's unfortunate that I must stress "white English" but I do because none of my brothers or I have ever felt anything other than English. /4

None of us have felt the sharp lash of racism that seems to obsess mostly very well-paid white people living in North London. We've just minded our own business and got on with our lives, with the co-operation of the open-minded working class society in which we live. /5
Perhaps those of us who opted for seamless peaceful integration rather than endless victimhood, confrontation and divisiveness have taken things too far for some people.
But you know what?
Bollocks to them.
Merry Christmas, everybody! xxx
