It’s interesting seeing the sheer number of people liking/RTing this without any self-reflection or awareness of this being an account of how white supremacy manifests itself and convinces people like OP’s father to destroy themselves rather than dismantle it. https://twitter.com/cakeylaura/status/1341412374792835073
The aversion of ‘change’ is not some strange phenomenon or confusing situation it is the reaction to an unravelling of a system that has for so long used race as the defining point of someone’s value. And so even if you were poor, whiteness provided stability over the chaos.
And not just whiteness, gender, sexuality and all of these things were systems that enabled a lot of would-be labour voters to turn Tory because the rage that stems from a threat to your position of power (even if it may be in your head - which it isn’t because it’s
validated by state violence toward people who are not white) is much more motivating than economic fulfilment and stability. The culture here allows people to believe in financial stability in the long term, even if they are broke...but the idea of racial stability is much more
fragile & any threat to it makes everything else irrelevant. It’s precisely why progressives here are so -confused- and -flabbergasted- by how everything has gone to sh*t. Because they too can not distinguish a political system rooted in a racial hierarchy.
It’s also why they close their ears even when people like me (who have seen the Tory machinery from the inside AND experienced the debilitating violence of the state both as a person of colour from Pakistan and also as an enemy of the state) say ‘this is about white supremacy.’
Also please, for some reason people take these critiques/reflections personally and I just am going to caveat with no I don’t think you’re a bad person because you love your racist/ignorant family members lol. I am asking for you to dig deeper and understand your role in this.
Maybe re-read Martin Luther King Jr’s Birmingham letters and why civil rights prophets such as himself and many others have always warned about white liberals & progressives choosing to silence the people change is good for in favour of solidarity with the people afraid of it.
Also maybe my first sentence was a bit antagonistic but understand that however insulted you might be by my demands for reflection...I’m the one that’ll be persecuted and marginalised for lacklustre attempts to make change.
