Yesterday I took a Lyft and the driver was talkative. As usual, I asked how long he had been driving for rideshare services but his honesty floored me:

“About a year and a half now. Ever since I lost my business”

That prompted a discussion...
He had owned a transport business with 7 box trucks. He had a contract with ONE company and was doing very well.

The company then purchased their own trucks and gave him 3 months notice. He tried to make it work and lasted 6 months but then threw in the towel, losing a lot.
I asked him what could he have done differently and his honesty was revealing:

“I should have been more humble. I spent money on watches and things without caring about the price. All my drivers got bonuses and I treated my employees great but that wasn’t enough.”
He said that his attitude had changed once he thought he was successful and he didn’t pay close enough attention to saving cash or adding more contracts.

He was making more than he ever had and he thought he had arrived. The business failure was his wake up call.
I offered him 5 books to read in 2021 and we exchanged numbers.

He said that he sought out God after and has been giving of himself more than anything to make up for his selfish ways. Instead of judging him, I offered to let him pray with me when he dropped me home.
I told him that his story needed to be heard by more entrepreneurs because he could save a lot of us some heartache. I offered to help him get on some podcasts, get some articles out and do some online videos.

I said that he literally had nothing to lose and he liked the idea.
His honesty was a good reminder to me that no matter how successful you think you are, you can’t take your eye off the ball.

It’s also a reminder that each of us has our own challenges and there is no point in passing judgement. Just leave positivity in each person you meet.
