Hey folks! At the request of @nerdypursuit I’m doing a thread on Cal Maritime one of the few Maritime Academies in pursuit of knowledge in #LearnAboutDOT
Not that it’s a part of DOT but these students/graduates do have a high chance of working in fields directly impacted by DOT

I was there for a year 2009-2010 before I enlisted and it was one the best in my short life. Also, a lot has changed since as Cal Maritime moves forward in research and innovation.

Cal Maritime is the smallest of the Cal State campuses and you don’t have to commission into the military or the merchant marines upon graduation. It is however an approve school for the NROTC program out of Berkeley, which drew me to it. I was an adorable MIDN.
When I attended I chose Global Studies, which was one of five offered majors:
Business
Global Studies and Maritime Affairs
Marine Transportation
Marine Engineering
Mechanical Engineering

So happy to see these majors now expanded. Look at all these options

Okay maybe it’s still not a lot but Cal Maritime’s focus is of course the sea and the glorious things we can accomplish via maritime transportation. To that end, all cadets (students) are required to attend at least one cruise via the Golden Bear.
At least they were when I went but now it looks like business and global studies are offered international trip experiences vs having to go on the training cruise. It’s gotten a lot cooler and I’m jealous https://www.csum.edu/tsgb-cruise/follow-the-voyages.html
My favorite experience was being able to be on a simulation team my first year as part of my Maritime Security course. We worked with cadets across majors for a simulated oil spill in San Fran Bay. Our role was working to see if said spill was connected to terrorism.
It was not as glorious as it sounds, but we got to work with FBI agents out of San Fran and learn how communication works between techies on deck to security teams on land.
Here’s my favorite techie from those days, who is a graduate and now works for shipping company as an operations manager I think out of New York.
Yes, we wear uniforms and have a corps of cadets which offers leadership opportunities and structure, because how else am I going to get my ass out of bed at 7am?
but again, no military service required upon graduation like some academies.

We also have sports teams and community engagement teams like any other college and my proudest freshman moment was forming a town hall with the city of Vallejo and introducing initiatives for cadets to serve in the local community.
Life led me elsewhere but I treasure my time at Cal Maritime. If anyone out there is looking for a smaller state school to attend with global opportunities, check them out! Ask any questions, I’ll try to answer or at least point you in the right direction https://www.csum.edu/
Follow them on twitter @Cal_Maritime and go on an adventure of your own! Happy Holidays, #teamPete and transportation nerds.
