Today is 10yrs since Jung Hoseok, the popular BH trainee, moved into the BTS dorms to round out the RL. He was already an accomplished dancer having won several competitions including one at the Nat’l level. But he was determined to become a rapper (a thread)... #10yearswithjhope
Not just an idol who raps—which he could have done. But bc of his passion and respect for his work, his team, hip hop, he set his standards higher. He began to write and became the 2nd BTS member w/KOMCA registered credits when he wrote his own bars for Jo Kwon’s Animal in 2012.
Over the decade he spent honing his craft he developed a style that is distinctly “j-hope,” carving out a niche for himself, and establishing a fresh new genre that is immediately recognizable as his own.
It’s a genre defined by incredible tonal diversity demonstrated in songs like You Never walk Alone and Hangsang.
He created such unique inflections and sounds that he’s made himself a difficult artist to cover.
He’s also demonstrated impressive speed and diction in songs like Her:
and Ma City (where he lovingly praises his hometown Gwangju that boasts of him with equal adoration abs fervor!).
He even sings! His signature melodic rap and transitions between vocals and raps are legendary. Even his vocal adlibs are iconic!
And let’s not forget the incredible passion and energy he brings to his stages through his rap. I don’t think any of us will ever get over his performances in Tear and Baepsae.
But none of his experimental tones or rapid speeds or emotional deliveries ever compromise his impeccable flow. Look at the tricky rhythms he pulls off flawlessly (live even!) in Love Maze!
And with 111 registered credits, Hoseok has become a respected and accomplished songwriter blessing ARMYs and the world with thoughtful, intelligent, profound, beautiful, and often biting lyrics. (B&G, P.O.P. pt 1, Hangsang).
His recent track Dis-ease has earned significant critical acclaim for its great old school hip hop sound and its hard-hitting, clever, and relatable lyrics.
It goes without saying that on top of his expert rap and prolific writing, he has been an outstanding and reliable pillar to Bangtan and ARMY. As the Dance and Performance Leader he has worked hard to help earn his team their reputation as World Class Performers.
He’s given BTS and ARMY nothing but his absolute best for 10 years now. So thank you, Jung Hoseok for staying with us. For growing into one of the greatest artists of our generation. For giving us music that has changed us. For being our Sunshine and our Hope. For being YOU.
