I’m hearing a lot of convos about where elected officials fall in vaccine prioritization.

My understanding of the DSHS guidance for group 1B (expected to start receiving vaccines in a few weeks) is that there’s no provision for essential workers of any sort 1/
Instead group 1B will include folks over 65 and folks with medical conditions that make them high risk for severe COVID.

This follows group 1A (currently being vaccinated), which includes frontline hospital workers and residents and workers at long term care facilities 2/
(Side note: I am very excited that both my dad and my mother-in-law have now been vaccinated as front line hospital workers!)

Texas’s Group 1B deviates from some of the federal recommendations. I wasn’t in the conversations to determine the group, but I trust our experts. 3/
And I believe it’s critical that we as elected officials respect their determinations of vaccine priority.

I look forward to the day that it’s my turn to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, but given my age and health, I expect it to be a while. 4/
It’s a little frustrating, because the nature of legislative workers means I will be in close proximity with folks who are not taking precautions.

BUT that’s the nature of so much work these days. Teachers, first responders, and grocery store workers all are high exposure. 5/
I don’t want to take the spot of these essential workers, particularly those with risk factors. Since DSHS has decided to move forward with age and medical condition determinations, I hope elected officials across the board will respect that and wait our turns. 6/6
