York has seen 80.5 deaths per 100,000 residents due to COVID. According to Pennsylvania Department of Health data, York averages about 15.7 deaths per 100,000 each year due to flu, a common COVID comparison. In a county of nearly 450k this means appx 70 flu deaths per year.

This graph looks familiar if you've seen how quickly we've reached 1,000 and 5,000 additional new cases, but the data is different this time. Let's look at how quickly York had reached the equivalent of one flu season.
3/
York had its 1st case 3/18, & 1st death 4/2. It took:

121 days to 70 deaths (1 flu season) July 17
64 days to 140 deaths (2 flu seasons) Sep 19
47 days to 210 deaths (3 flu seasons) Nov 5
35 days to 280 deaths (4 flu seasons) Dec 10
12 days to 350 deaths (5 flu seasons) Dec 22.
Today York County added 11 more deaths, a single day high, putting us well on our way to six flu seasons.
This is what the result of exponential growth in new cases looks like.

The heavy black line shows York's cumulative death count, & vertical lines indicate the date when York added 70 deaths, or 1 flu season. Both the steeper slope of the black line and the vertical lines occurring closer together show that York is adding deaths much faster now.

COVID is now the third leading cause of death for 2020 in York behind cancer & heart disease, according to the DOH historical data. At the current rate averaging 6-7 COVID deaths a day, it's now the leading daily cause of death - 50% more than heart disease & cancer combined.

• The York County morgue already had capacity issues, with only having room for nine adults in a space shared with York Hospital. This is forcing grieving families to start making arrangements much faster than normal.

• From a WaPo article on how we've become numb to numbers: "Instead of a single discrete event — like the twin towers collapsing on Sept. 11, 2001 — the pandemic has unfolded as an invisible, slow-creeping, chronic hazard. Over time, our brains gradually tune out the danger."

And they interviewed a Lancaster hospice nurse:
“You do everything you can to make sure they don’t feel alone,” she said. “But it’s hard to convey just how isolated it is.”
