Terribly, terribly sad. Kevin was one of my favourite reporters to work with, a real character, one of the last old-school journos in the BBC newsroom at TV Centre.. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/55409684
So many stories I could tell about him. He’d do his report for the Six o’clock news, then disappear before you could get him into the edit suite to recut for the evening bulletin. After a while, you’d know where to look. He’d be in the BBC club bar thinking up new puns for his...
..script over a quick pint or two.
He was an editor’s nightmare. They’d want him to discuss the structure of his reports and file his scripts in the computer system so they could make changes. Instead, he’d write his words on the back of old envelopes and beermats, completely..
..illegible to anyone except Kevin himself. And yet for all that they were full of gems - turns of phrase that made the pictures live. He’d take a quick look at the vt, scribble furiously for 5 minutes, and then one take later, another masterpiece.
The most fun I ever had working with him was a report about the Grand National that never was, because the starter fucked it up. I heard a rumour the same guy had fucked up another race start some months before. I dug up the pictures and showed them to Kevin..
The look of devilish glee on his face was hilarious. I’ll never forget it. He made the sequence the central part of his report, which ended up leading the bulletins. He definitely earned his pints in the Club bar that day.
RIP Kevin. There really will never be one like you again
