Lee Soo-Man did pave the way for BTS a little. But he's very far from being instrumental in their success. He did pioneer the commercialization of KPOP but there were loads of groups before SM starting with So Bang Cha and Seo Taiji Boys. Actually, YG paved more than SM.
Their music had more recent success (CL, Big Bang and PSY) and was more westernized than SM. I thought Boa would create some buzz in the US but her success was never achieved. No comment on SM's current generation of groups and their US prospects. 😂
Honestly, BTS' success largely rests on their shoulders and no one else. Even the Korean market didn't recognize their potential until international success. Then how can the BIG 3 agencies really take credit for BTS' success when they haven't ever succeeded in the West.
The BIG 3 marketing philosophy really differs with Big Hit. SM controls EVERYTHING that goes out on air whereas BTS have freedom to show themselves. It's really shown to be an effective marketing tool, something all entertainment companies should learn, EAST and WEST.
I think we're witnessing how to really harness the Internet as a tool for fan relations. And we've also come to a realization that not just showing the bling bling of a celebrity but the real raw moments of just waking up or the emotional vulnerabilities only create a stronger
bond with the fans.

BTS would've succeeded if SM didn't exist. They would've succeeded if YG didn't exist. JYP too... However, each of those agencies all contributed to what we know as KPOP so they can't be entirely dismissed.

In conclusion, KPOP paved the way, not SM.
