When MacArthur Parker calls Troy, the script has him offering Troy a part on a German version of “Laverne & Shirley” playing “Der Lennysquiggen” & Troy replying that he will need a travel pillow.
There's just one change on this page, but it's a vast improvement. When Selma tells Troy she went on a date once with a movie star, the script had him asking if it was Tony Curtis. As aired Troy asks “Who was it George Segal? I hear he plays the banjo!”
On this page Selma's line about Troy playing a Billy Joel cartridge for her, along with Marge's response “That's wonderful.” were cut. Patty's funny line referencing Troy's fetish was replaced with “What's the matter, I'm not fun enough for ya?”
The script also had a cut scene where the other film playing at the drive-in was Linda Blair in “Zombie Cop”. We see a scene from the film, and then we see that Cletus & Brandine are also there & they have a conversation about what it would be like if Cletus became a zombie.
That scene may have been cut because there were two real movies called “Zombie Cop” that had been released. One was in 1991, and it was also the alternate title of a 1988 film starring Treat Williams & Joe Piscopo, which sounds more ridiculous than the Linda Blair joke!
Instead as aired, they had the very funny marquee of “Muppets Go Medieval, Sat: Closed For Demolition.”
I did not know until putting together this deep dive, that when Troy lights the two cigars in his mouth and gives one to Selma, that it is a reference to a 1942 film called “Now, Voyager” starring Bette Davis and Paul Henreid.
One small change on this page. When Troy uses the lines on Selma that he is simultaneously saying in the muppet movie, the script has him correcting himself when he says “dainty hoof”. It was much funnier for him to not make that correction.
There's one small change on the last page of Act I. When Troy & Selma kiss, the script called for it to follow the earlier shot, with the two of them in the foreground with the movie screen with Troy & Piggy in the background. Instead they did a front-facing shot.
For the “Entertainment Tonight”-type show that begins Act II, they ended up reversing the lines for the man and woman host. I'm not sure why a change like that would take place. It doesn't seem to really make a difference comedy-wise.
The first line by the ET anchor had the line “In tonight's 'Inside Poop, Inside Scoop'” cut. A funny reaction line was added after the line about Troy meeting a woman, “A woman! Huh! Okay.”
The clip for “Leper In The Backfield” had Troy's arm fall off on its own. In the script a linebacker ripped it off. Also, the second anchor's line changes from “He's busier than ever, and rumor has it...” to “And with news of his upcoming wedding, rumor has it...”
After the line by the anchor (woman in the script/man on air) about the co-anchor being wrong about Troy being a washed-up deviant, there's a cut line in the script “True love has meant true fame for Troy McClure.” That leads to a funny deleted scene with Patty, Bart & Marge.
That deleted scene leads to a 2+ page deleted scene where Troy & Selma join Patty at The Simpsons house for dinner. It's here that we originally get “The Greatest Story Ever Hulaed”. Lisa knowing Troy from “Locker Room Towel Fight” was moved to later in the episode.
Those unused pages have some good moments, including Homer's Brain trying to get him out of trouble, and Patty assuming that Troy will be moving into her and Selma's apartment, leading to her to say, “There goes topless spaghetti Tuesdays”.
At the bottom of this page, when the scene moves to Troy's house, there is an unused direction showing that Troy bought Selma a Range Rover. There have been several mentions in the script to this point of Troy getting new work & having new success that were cut.
That was a smart decision to cut out the new found success that Troy was having. It made the decision later to have a baby more consequential. The same with the ending tag joke about the film he chose to do instead of McBain. He has no backup success to get him through.
When we enter Troy's living room we see three movie posters. The script called for four, but there really wasn't room. As a result, we miss out on another film that we may remember Troy from, “An American In Toronto”. (Which is very funny.)
Jumping ahead a couple of pages because there were no differences early in “Stop The Planet of the Apes, I Want To Get Off”, the script did have a funny extra verse for “Dr. Zaius”. This draft did NOT have a break dancing ape!
In 2017 a very thorough history of the Planet of the Apes musical was written. https://slate.com/culture/2017/07/simpsons-planet-of-the-apes-musical-an-oral-history.html
When Troy introduces Selma at the end of the play, this draft of the script did not have her line or Homer yelling “Down in front!” at her.
The script has a deleted scene in The Simpsons bedroom between Homer and Marge with Homer wondering why no celebrities wanted to marry him.
When the scene moves to Troy's house the script has a page and a half that was cut, with Selma talking about the features, Bart doing an impression of Troy, and Lisa looking into the telescope in the living room and discovering that it's pointed at the Springfield Aquarium.
The script also has a good unused line where Selma tells us that Troy's DeLorean was from his movie “Freak-Out on Interstate 2000” and Marge responds that “Homer's car was on COPS once.”
Since the dinner scene was cut, when The Simpsons go to Troy's house in the episode, it is the first time the kids meet him. So a line was added with Troy meeting the kids & Lisa saying what film strip she knew him from was moved here. (And funny reply from Troy was added.)
As aired, Selma's line to Marge about their dream husbands and which one of them had their dream come true moved from Troy's driveway to the pool, and a funny line from Homer was added.
