Recently I shared what #CommonApp members can do to help students - esp. #firstgen and low-income students who’ve been impacted the most this year - better mitigate the impact of #COVID19 on their college aspirations. Below are a few ideas (a thread): 1/ #emchat
An application fee can mean the difference between submitting an application & having to prioritize urgent family needs. We encourage colleges to consider waiving #collegeapp fees for #firstgen & low-income students who may not be eligible for a #CommonApp need-based waiver. 2/
With so many disruptions to the academic year, many students have had to learn virtually & have not had the same access to their #schoolcounselors, who provide immeasurable support. Being flexible with #collegeapp deadlines could make a huge difference. 3/
Many students from low-income backgrounds might not feel that they can afford college given their family circumstances. Be clear with students on what options are available. Share information on how to apply for scholarships & financial aid through your school. 4/
Many students have not been able to take standardized test this year & 85% of #CommonApp members have moved to test-optional - a game-changer. Be clear about application requirements, esp. on what “test-optional” means, & what will be weighed in admissions decisions. 5/
Direct outreach to students can be incredibly impactful. Reach out to students who have applied or might be applying early and often to find out how your office can help them get to the finish line. 6/
According to @pewresearch, 1 in 4 teens from lower-income households do not have access to a home computer, & 35% have to do homework on a cell phone. Our new app, #CommonApp for mobile, provides the same application experience on mobile. http://onelink.to/7jbjn4  7/
For the last several months I’ve been sounding the alarm on the troubling college admission trends we’ve been seeing. As we near January application deadlines, these are just a few things colleges can do. They might seem small, but could have a large, lasting impact. 8/
2020 has proven that higher education is *still* the best investment one can make. Thanks to all those in this space doing everything you can to ensure every student has a shot at a college degree. x/
