Things people don’t realise about having type 1 diabeties that people don’t know about and why we need more support

An educational thread :
Having to pay for insulin in some places of that world which has been widely inflated so some people cannot even afford rent if they want to be able to afford this drug which keeps them alive.

The extreme fear of the future and having children in case you pass it down to them
The body issues that come with having type 1

Having your weight constantly monitored growing up

The stigma and ignorance from people always thinking diabetes is caused by being fat and eating too much sugar

Having random people scrutinise and judge you for what you eat
Always having to check food labels for carbs and knowing exactly what is in exactly what you eat

Never being able to just freely eat and always having to do maths and calculations before it

People being unsympathetic since “you did this to yourself”
God forbid you have a mental illness or even worse an eating disorder which at least 25% of type ones get before they’re 25

Not having your mental health professionals understand the disease and therefore cannot help you
Not being able to be admitted for eating disorder care since places do not know how to care for it

The absolute hell of substitute teachers

Having to put your life in your own hands and take responsibility for that
The lack of sleep from being woken up at 3 am from a low or not being able to sleep until your blood sugars have gone back down

... and schools being completely ignorant about that

Schools not having appropriate resources for diabetics like safe places to inject
Never , never , never getting a break you have to fight this everyday
And again the complete ignorance people have towards it thinking you just can’t eat sugar it’s everything carbs are in everything
If you forget to take a pill before you go to bed .. eh it’s okay I can take it tomorrow

You forget to take your insulin before a meal

...

Well your in a for a few hours of pain
Injuries and illness take type 1 diabetes 3x as long to get over

And having a weaker immune system
Parents not separating you and your diabetes and putting that first just you walk through your front door and don’t yet

“Welcome back how was your day?”

Just get

“Your blood sugars okay?”

Gets annoying
The stress and strain it puts on your friends, family and partners which people fail to realise
Then having to feel responsible for that since this is your disease

Having cures be talked about in school science lessons and them giving you false hope
Not having people around you that understand and the generally loneliness that comes with it
