Want to take the opportunity to provide a feature thread into investing in precious metals, particularly gold coins.

Please take a minute to read though, hope you find it valuable!

The spot gold price refers to the price at which gold is being bought and sold right now.

At the moment it's sitting at around $1,880 US an ounce.

Gold quality is often measured in karats.

Karat is a measurement of the ratio of gold to other metals or alloys.

Karats are measured on a scale from 0 to 24.

The higher the karat number, the more gold content.

--THREAD--
Breakdown

24 karats = .999 fine gold (24 parts gold /24)
22 karats = .917 fine gold (22 parts gold + 2 parts other metal /24)
18 karats = .750 fine gold (18 parts gold + 6 parts other metal /24)
14 karats = .583 fine gold (14 parts gold + 10 parts other metal /24)

Other metals and alloys could include copper, nickel, silver, or palladium.
Yellow gold - purest form
White gold - mixed with palladium or nickel
Rose gold - mixed with copper

White and rose gold are often associated with jewellery

Weight and sizes

Gold is measured in troy ounces, and comes in a range of sizes.

-Sizes (bullion) (1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10oz, 1/20oz) The smaller sizes attract much greater premiums than the spot price of gold. Often these premiums are lost when re-selling.

-Coin types

Coin types can be broken down into collectible coins and bullion coins.

Bullion coins - minted in different countries, commonly available depending on geographical location

--THREAD--
Examples of common bullion coins

Austrian Philharmonic - .999 gold
American Eagle - .917 gold
American Buffalo - .9999 gold
British Britannia - .9999 gold
Canadian Maple Leaf - .9999 gold
Australian Gold Nugget - .9999 gold
South African Krugerrand - .917 gold

--THREAD--
Bullion/slightly collectible coins - small premium, with some collectible value. Often you can find these in average condition for low premiums.

Examples

French Napoleon - .900 gold
Sovereign - .917 gold

Both have a long history and interesting collecting appeal.

--THREAD--
Coin Quality

Coin quality can be graded anywhere within Good, Very Good, Fine, Very Fine, Extremely Fine, Almost Uncirculated, Unicirculated.

The grading is important when collecting, not so much investing in bullion.

Proof is a different method of minting.
