Alright, time to start my retread through Bakuman. Should be...interesting since I've kinda grown increasingly more sour on Ohba over the years #BakuJet

On the one hand, wanting to be famous is a pretty realistic motivation for a teen boy to wanna pursue a goal like that. On the other hand, presenting wanting to be famous like it's obligatory, seems...weird #BakuJet

Definently is some truth to this one considering even Oda's only worth around $20 mil or so apparently which seems low for how big OP is. Kinda surprised Ohba would be allowed to say, even indirectly, that he didn't make a ton off Death Note though #BakuJet

Teen me: "Seems sweet he held a torch for that long, but I guess real life doesn't work out that way"

People much, much smarter than I have gone on at length about how ridiculous this entire scenario is, so I won't harp on it too much, but even putting all that aside, this is how she's properly introduced into the story. A literal trophy girl. Fucking hell, Ohba #BakuJet

I remember reading this part as a teen, and having read a lot more manga since then, this is honestly the truest statement about the manga industry this series has to offer #BakuJet

So having made my way through volume 1 of Bakuman, the manga industry trivia is neat, but between this and Platinum End, it's dawned on me that Death Note only worked as well as it did because as a protagonist, Light was a sociopath you were clearly supposed to hate on (1/2)

some level. I don't think Ohba like...gets people enough to write characters you'd want to root for beyond mild quirkiness and can resonate with emotionally. Even at it's best Death Note completely lacked that.

Also he's a sexist loser who should be shoved in a locker (2/2)

So the real battle series was Jump's editorial department all along #BakuJet

I'd say this whole "star-crossed lovers" bit feels like it was written by a teenager, but I'm pretty sure even teens could probably write romance better than Ohba #BakuJet

This SEEMS silly but I guarantee you if a teen boy ever got to write for Jump they absolutely WOULD ask if they could axe MHA or Black Clover because they think they're lame compared to their favorite

I'd say Miho is good and I DO recall liking her but I know better than to trust Ohba with women so I'm sure he'll go out of his way to call her stupid at some point #BakuJet

Obata did a pretty good job of drawing Luffy and Naruto well enough to almost mistake them for the real thing, but what on earth did he do to Yusei? #BakuJet

Again whenever it comes to Jump stuff specifically, Bakuman really hits the nail on the head #BakuJet

And so begins one man's journey from being editor-in-chief at Jump in Japan, to being a manga character, and then finally editor-in-chief at Jump in America #BakuJet

Suuuuurrree enough Miyoshi is already getting dunked on despite being the only one with enough common sense to point how how friggin' stupid this romance subplot is.

I feel like "Miyoshi deserves better" is probably going to be my mantra for the rest of this re-read #BakuJet

Look I know I shouldn't be harping on this too much because these characters are literally middle schoolers at this point in the story but *HNNNNNNNGGGGGHHHHHH* #BakuJet

This would be a really cute scene if these two had any actual chemistry or Miho was at least something resembling a character and not a literal trophy wife #BakuJet

I know everything in Bakuman isn't exact but it is interesting getting an idea of the ways ranking polls in JUMP can affect a manga's trajectory #BakuJet

I get Bakuman is largely about what it takes to compete in JUMP and all, but the fact this scene largely comes off as "gotta do what it takes to be popular" than two artists making a creative decision just feels...hollow #BakuJet

This would be a wonderful opportunity to showcase Azuki working her way through the VO industry or at least Mashiro showing serious concern for his "future bride" getting harrased, but silly me thinking Ohba cares enough about women for that #BakuJet

I already knew from that weird bit in Platinum End where a character went "I'm not against gay marriage, but I think gay people are creepy" that Ohba's a thinly veiled homophobe, but FUCKING CHRIST #BakuJet

On the one hand, this bit makes me want to upgrade punching Ohba in the face to hitting him with a baseball bat, but on the other hand there's probably a depressingly high number of shonen authors who think like this (and why JUMP could seriously use some female editors) #BakuJet
