The pope recently announced his favorite economist -- @MazzucatoM.
I asked her about capitalism, the myth of the free market, austerity, and what she thinks of these $600 relief checks.
"It’s a crime," she told me. https://the.ink/p/austerity

Listen to @MazzucatoM break down why $600 isn't enough.
I wish more American policy makers spoke with such clarity.
"This amount will simply not be enough to allow people to access their basic human rights."

I asked @MazzucatoM what it's like to be the pope's fave -- and why she thinks he has made the reform of economic dogmas so central to his papacy.
Because, she said, he understands where the power is.

I asked her about the pope's claim that women are changing economic thinking because of their experience of caregiving -- is that true, or sexist, or both?
@MazzucatoM sorted it out.

I asked her why people denigrate government spending when there is little in the private sector that could match the returns of, say, our $8 billion annual investment in the federal courts, with the trillions of dollars of economic activity it protects and thus facilitates.
"The state actually has been massively essential for capitalism to work," @MazzucatoM told me. "That's the myth about the free market. Without the state, we wouldn't have capitalism." https://the.ink/p/austerity
I asked @MazzucatoM about the debate about whether we should double down on, minorly tweak, massively reform, or totally abolish capitalism -- and she rejected the entire premise of my question!
While telling me exactly what we should do instead. https://the.ink/p/austerity

I asked @MazzucatoM about conditionalities, which is the idea of the government behaving like a benign mob boss to companies, offering help IN EXCHANGE FOR SOCIALLY USEFUL THINGS.
She gave an example of how it works if you have smart policymakers.

I asked @MazzucatoM why she, uncommonly for an academic, spends so much time helping policymakers implement her theories.

And I asked @MazzucatoM, a master baker and, briefly this year, a bread mentor of mine, what sourdough can teach us about economics and the common good. https://the.ink/p/austerity
