The association between covid and myocarditis has been known since the early summer. Coaches, administrators and conferences practice and play despite these knowable risks. Worse, some colleges seem undeterred by persistent spread around teams. https://twitter.com/byberkowitz/status/1341572353952788481
When we look back at how we responded to the pandemic, there will be a lot to be ashamed of, but the way educational institutions risked unpaid students for revenue despite knowable health risks will be pretty high on the list.
Some of these schools even had players sign covid liability waivers, making students bear the risks schools were creating by playing. From SI in June: https://www.si.com/college/2020/06/17/college-athletes-coronavirus-waivers-ohio-state-smu
To hear the way coaches and broadcasters discuss it, covid was just more “adversity” to overcome. And what a great job they all did! That the adversity was manufactured by programs putting schedules ahead of player safety and preventing infection went unmentioned.
