In medical school, I learned of the dangers of diphtheria. Diptheria was a major cause of death in kids in the early 20th century but decreased dramatically after a vaccine was introduced. I’ve never seen a case, and only 2 cases have been reported in the US since 2004. 2/
Polio has an even more amazing story. It paralyzed many Americans but with a vaccine, it has been eradicated in the western hemisphere, and there have been no cases of natural polio in the US since 1979. 3/
In residency, I learned of common causes of meningitis in babies and toddlers. Hemophilus was the most common cause of meningitis in kids under 5, but an effective vaccine was introduced in 1987. As a result, I have yet to see a case of Hemophilus meningitis. 4/
Vaccines are one of the greatest public health interventions of the last century. Never before has my generation had a front row seat to something like this. This is our chance to see science and teamwork in action and reduce this pandemic to a distant memory. #VacciNATION
