Culture (with a small c) is the way we interact as humans. The way we talk to each other, sing to each other, celebrate, commiserate, dance. Culture with a big C *should be* the elevation and amplification of those things so that we might better understand ourselves.
In order for this to be true we need to build our work from the ground up, by investing in our grassroots, listening, helping people who didn’t even realise that they could be artists to be artists. By making participation key to the genesis of work rather than its end point.
The first point of any theatre company’s mission should relate to small-c culture rather than big-C. Doing this will help us ask serious questions about the way we work, the way we fund and the people who make the decisions about all these things.
Anyway. Merry Christmas x
