Why I (and many Jews) don't celebrate Christmas in any form, no matter how much you see it as an "American" or "secularized" holiday. (A thread.)
When boiled down beyond the trees and presents, Christmas signifies the birth of a man who Christians consider to be the Messiah, savior, God.
Historically, Christians then used this belief to persecute, oppress, and otherwise "other" Jews who did not believe this, for 1000s of years. (Not even brushing the surface on treatment of Muslims and the forced conversion of indigenous people in colonized lands.)
So, no, I don't really want anything to do with a holiday that, no matter how "fun," has a historic legacy of causing persecution and intolerance for my religion.
Accepting the religious holiday of "Christmas" as a secular, "American" holiday accepts the Christian hegemony that is still rampant in our society and government systems.
It's only a stone's throw from here to white nationalism, antisemitism, and other oppressive isms. See: Mike Pence.
Friends, I love you, your ugly sweaters, your trees, and tastefully done lights. I will happily be in a gift exchange and receive holiday cards. I want you to have a joyous celebration, whether based in secular or religious grounds. And I will sing along to some Christmas songs!
But please remember: Not all of your friends, colleagues, and loves ones celebrate this holiday. Assuming they do (and wishing them as such) is Christian Hegemony!! Be broad with your words, don't forget to acknowledge Jewish (etc) holidays, and as always, be ready to listen.
PS Green and red are Christmas colors, not "winter" colors.
