Was thinking recently about how I've been ashamed to some degree of Asian culture and how I admire and relate to Western individualistic ideals much more.
This isn't really right. There are things that are good and bad from both cultures and it's important to understand that.

As an immigrant or the descendant of an immigrant you are much more likely to succeed in the West the more you assimilate to their cultures and values. This may be true to some degree but you shouldn't have to sacrifice who you are or what you stand for.
I have also realised that I have internalised some stereotypes and narratives of Asians or Muslims. Which means I distance myself further (maybe subconsciously) because I don't want to align with that narrative, even though it may be false.
There are a lot of things to be proud about as Asians (or wherever you're from). The collectivist ideals we have are powerful and strengthen our sense of community and compassion.
