Musicians’ expectations are so low, I’ve been shamed for complaining that Galaxie 500 made $33,440 for 8.8 million streams on Spotify this year. There are 3 of us in that band, so that’s $11,147 per musician (gross, not net). What are your expectations, and what should they be?
Maybe you think streaming income is just a bonus, extra on top of what we otherwise earn anyway. But according to the @RIAA, streaming is now 85% of all recorded music income in the US
In other words, if a musician manages to eke out more than another 15% revenue for their recordings through non-streaming sources, they are lucky/clever/unusual in that regard. And that 15% is dwindling fast - streaming has boomed under lockdown
