also watched james and the giant peach with the roomies. the character design is exceptional--leans on shapes and silhouettes without relying on traditional associations between personality traits and basic shapes.
each bug carries a distinct charisma that is emphasized more by costuming than by shape choices. there is a shape language, but it permits each character design to host a myriad of both sharp and soft qualities.
half the bugs' silhouettes would just look like long french fries if they were laid out in a row, but their faces and limbs are mapped in a way thats carefully maximalist yet always spacious enough to emote effortlessly.
grasshopper's curious googly eyes complement a wise, hard-edged mouth while centipede's sharp nose lives on a face as pliable and expressive as putty--a charmingly multifaceted deviation from the predictability of round and soft = friendly, sharp = threatening, etc.
even the worm's sunglasses shapeshift regularly to leads its body language, never overpowering the bold (and defining) choice of its pointed nose. the intuition is visible. so great!
