Despite the weather we've been able to finish off one of our new hedge rows. This spec is a shade tolerant mix into area we've mulched. No herbicides or guards. We've got both bare roots and cell growns in this one due to species availability - But which one is better!
Bareroots are most common. Field grow before being 'undercut' and removed and bagged. They are cheaper of the two. I'd say harder to plant well of the two option though as its tricky to complete avoid 'J rooting' , where skinny roots end up heading up rather than out and down.
Cells are grown in trays in compost. More expensive but far more of the root system survives the process. Higher survival rates. Easier to plant well, particularly if you are digging pits vs notch planting. Generally smaller though so a high risk of being overtaken by 'weeds'.
Sorry for the various typo's! Wet phone screen!
