Some have been irresponsibly suggesting that fishing, on which a Brexit deal may hang, is the smallest economic sector in the UK
This is just wrong
It’s the fourth smallest (of 143 sectors) contributing slightly more output than coal mining, tobacco, and vegetable oil manufacture
Same chart, this time measuring employment by industry. Fishing accounts for about 0.04% of total employment in Great Britain.
Biggest sectors: retail & education
Smallest: again, coal mining & tobacco manufacture
UK is not alone in having a tiny, tiny fishing sector vs rest of its economy.
Same is true of France, Germany, Italy & every EU member. Even in Spain, which dominates EU fishing, it’s still only 0.13% of total GDP over the past decade.
Something to ponder amid Brexit negotiations
