Thread: PEGAN Root of Chrismas Day
First of all, Let's Define Some terms for better Understanding of the Issue
# CULTURAL DIGESTION: It is a phenomenon in which a more dominant culture has motivated desire to assimilate and reduce differences by asserting sameness
to less Dominant Culture. As a
consequence, the less dominant culture is stripped of its distinctive, traditional cultural practices and values. These are now a component of the dominant culture and become
associated with it. Memories of origins are erased
and, eventually, the less dominant
culture disappears
Ex of Digestion Completed: Christmas/Easter was digested from Pagans and are core parts of Christian culture.
Ex of Digestion in process:
Yoga-- Christian Yoga
Suryanamaskar- Son Salutation
# PEGAN: Pegan is derived from a Latin Word Peganus meaning Country man or local people
Therefore, the
use of the name pagan originally was not meant in a condescending way. To be a
pagan simply meant that one followed those religions that existed prior to Christianity
Christmas is Said to be Celebrated on Birth of Jesus. But let's see What else was Historically Celebrated on 25th Dec
1) The Persians celebrated it as the birthday of
Mithras (Mitra in Sanskrit means Sun God)
2) The Greeks celebrated it as the birth of Bacchus
3)Egyptians recognized it as the appearance
day of Osiris
4) The early Germans observed it as part of the Winter solstice, called the Yule feast
5) The Scandinavians celebrated it as the birthday of Freyr,
son of their god Odin and goddess Frigga
The purposes of the Christians in using the 25th of December as Christmas day was to change the pagan
festivals into Christian holidays, and to convert them by cultural digestion
BTW even today Eastern churches celebrate Christmas day on 7th of Jan
Even The gift-giving we now observe on Christmas is a carry-over from the early pagan celebrations, and is
not something that was started by Christianity. In fact, Tertullian, one of the early Fathers of
Christianity, called such practices rank idol@try
Please ignore some spelling mistakes
Eg Pagan instead of Pegan
