Yoshi's Favorite Reads of 2020

Nothing really tying these together, they were just some of my favorite books I read this year
The Quantum Magician by Derek Künsken

It's a heist book in space, but the real meat is that in the future humans have evolved into different branches, and while this book is essentially fun, it talks about some DARK ideas (the puppets?? *shudder*)) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38608575-the-quantum-magician
The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

A grouchy bookkeeper on a tiny island finds an abandoned baby and raises her. It's found family, so sweet, it's filled with book recommendations, and the ending made me cry. I love this family https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18293427-the-storied-life-of-a-j-fikry
The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller

This is a YA book that essentially follows a villainess try to rise to power. Her goals are:
1) Woo the Shadow King
2) Marry him
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself

It's just fun https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35702241-the-shadows-between-us
The Murmur of Bees by Sofía Segovia
A dose of fantastical realism set in Mexico during the Mexican Revolution and the influenza of 1918 (which was wild to read during Covid lockdown)
I loved these characters, these insights, I cried at the end https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42306076-the-murmur-of-bees
The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton

I really like Kate Morton's books. It's always multiple point of view of multiple generations and hops back and forth between them with a mystery being revealed. This one is classic Morton https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/38530939-the-clockmaker-s-daughter
I haven't read the Secret Garden as an adult (I think I did once as a kid) and I can see why it's a classic! It's really enjoyable, although it does have some antiquated ideas (Not as bad as Doctor Dolittle though, we should really stop remaking that one) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2998.The_Secret_Garden
I reread a bunch of Georgette Heyer's books this year. She's just so so SO good at comedy of manners books (Think Pride and Prejudice but even funnier) Great feel good books, I think my favorites are Sylvester, Cotillion, and The Corinthian https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32105.Sylvester
A Blade So Black by L.L. McKinney

Alice is a modern day girl living in Atlanta by day, and fighting the nightmares that spill out of Wonderland by night. It's a trilogy, the MC is a sailormoon cosplayer, there's a cute love interest, it's good! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36952594-a-blade-so-black
The Lightning-Struck Heart by T.J. Klune

This book is PURE fun! Everyone is Sarcastic gay, it's all found family, everyone is supportive, and our MC Sam has a huge crush on a knight-but he can't make eye contact- and that knight is dating the prince https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24468673-the-lightning-struck-heart
Loveboat, Taipei by Abigail Hing Wen

A girl who has lived in America her whole life is sent back to Taiwan for a summer to prep for college. But she struggles with immigrant family expectations, her need to rebel, and her own aspirations. RELATABLE https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23559994-loveboat-taipei
The Binding by Bridget Collins

Slow start, but it makes sense part way through and wow, what a lovely romance in the middle. The one magic ability in this world is wild and it's implications are so so dark I love it https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39964740-the-binding
The Sound of Stars by Alechia Dow

Bounces between 2 POV, M0Rr1S a lab made alien seen as inferior by his creators who likes forbidden human music, and Ellie a Black Ace/Demi girl who loves books living in a conquered New York. Stand alone, sweet https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/42185079-the-sound-of-stars
As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes

This was such a nice loving supplement to The Princess Bride. It's all the actors and creators sharing stories from the creation of the movie. Now I have to rewatch! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/21412202-as-you-wish
