How the show Never Have I Ever on Netflix is problematic [ A thread]
Never have I ever on Netflix directed by Mindy Kaling is highly problematic and talks stupid shit in name of "brown representation" the very first problem is the show being casteist. In the very first episode Modi is praised which we all know what Casteist bigot he is. (1/n)
Later in the series Brahmanical Practices have been glorified. In one of the episode the "pandit ji" is called someone who is superior and knowledgeable and the characters are asked to bow down and touch his feet which is nothing but Brahmin supremacy. (2/n)
The show also glorifies Brahmanical patriarchy. Devi's cousin who is pursuing PhD who is asked to get married by her parents. Devi's mother tell her "your in law's don't care about your achievements they want someone to take care of their son". She tries to resist this but (3/n)
At the end of the series she gives in because of fear of castration from the society and because his to be husband is hot? It is not surprising and not for the first time that diaspora directors have been Casteist. Another aspect of the series is that it's ableist. (4/n)
In the first episode when Devi's backstory is shown, it is showed that she lost sensation of her legs and had to be on wheelchair. However she gets back her sensation when she tries to stare at her crush. This is a clear mockery of disabled people bcz that's not (5/n)
How disabilities work.

TW // Anti Semitism

In one of the episodes, Devi fails to answer a history question related to Holocaust bcz she is busy thinking about her crush. It is when her Jewish rival gives the answer. Pissed off, she replies "I wish your family was killed too"

The show is also Islamophobic. In one of the episodes. One girl is castrated from rest of the public bcz she(7/n)
Married a Muslim guy of her choice. She later got divorced. When Devi's cousin approaches her as she too wants to marry a guy of her choice. She (the girl) advises her not to do so and that to do what her parents say bcz she regrets marrying a Muslim guy (8/n)
