As Christians, we have a responsibility to involve ourselves in issues of peace and justice. Our faith leads us to action.

But for some, the order has been switched. Faith doesn’t inform an issue, faith justifies one’s stance on an issue which has become their religion.
On the left, I have met many who have made it their life’s work fighting for justice in the area of immigration, the environment, or race relations, using Jesus as justification for their stance. Their god is the issue, not Jesus.
More prominently in our world today are those who care about ending abortion at ANY cost. It is their highest goal, their only priority, and the lens through which they see everything. They would never admit it, but their politics have become their god.
I know this because I see Christian people aligning themselves with very unchristian politicians, using very unchristian tactics, acting in very unchristian ways, to further their cause.

Their actions betray them: the issue means more than true discipleship.
No issue—not abortion, not the environment, not racism, not poverty, not anything—can be at the center of who we are. No issue is more essential than loving one’s enemies, showing mercy, forgiving others, and being humble.
If gaining ground on an issue requires you to do something Christ wouldn’t do—and you do it anyway—it might be time to reevaluate your priorities.

Discipleship comes first.

Everything else is secondary.
