The end of an era, both for @unamidnews and 🇬🇧🇩🇪 co-penholdership on Sudan🇸🇩. On the latter, it’s been a great parternship over the past 2 years and we’ll miss our German friends on the #UNSC https://twitter.com/ukun_newyork/status/1341508999850713092
I’ve worked on @unamidnews for the past 4 years. I’m relieved the UNSC adopted resolution 2559 but I’m also disappointed we weren’t able to continue UNAMID support to Darfur as it draws down. Significant challenges lie ahead and I hope the 🇸🇩 Govt will deliver for Darfur
As I reflect on the past 4 years, I’m also reminded of the progress that has been made. Darfur is on a much better footing for peace and stability than it was when @unamidnews began to draw down in 2017
At the start of UNAMID’s draw down, who would have thought it would handover some of its responsibilities to a 🇸🇩wide UN political mission @UNITAMS. There’s a lot of work to do get @UNITAMS operational but, along with the UNCT, it will provide vital support to 🇸🇩’s transition
There’s also an enormous of work to do to to ensure @unamidnews can withdraw safely. The full cooperation of the Govt 🇸🇩 will be essential. The 🇬🇧 will be monitoring the process closely. After over 13 years of service and sacrifice, the gains made by @unamidnews must be preserve
