the roots of the e-girl come from "gamer girls", which belle delphine was early on. she started gaining popularity online in mid 2018 and her specific aesthetic started trending. the look was seen as an "alt fashion" and got picked up by goth/emo kids on tiktok https://twitter.com/ModernGurlzz/status/1341547059623591942

the search history for e-girl/belle delphine: you'll see interest in her started before the giant rise in egirl looks in jan/feb 2019 (egirl factory trend) & it's why early egirl tiktoks had a lot of sexual undertones, cus they were copying someone creating sexual content
3/?

what we know as an egirl today is pretty different than what belle started off wearing, but that's because it got blended with 80s punk, 90s grunge, 2000s cosplay (always a point of reference 4 alt teens). hence the grommet belts, stripes, and "kawaii" influence
4/?

and because kids will be kids, they always wind up wearing what their peers are wearing. so if the majority of teens on tiktok turning themselves into egirls, they all will. and that's how you get a fullblown trend that doesnt know where it started from
5/?

not really related but you'd be surprised how many fashion trends are influenced by sex workers (latex/fishnets/makeup in general)
6/?

also important to note that VSCO girls and egirls rose in popularity online at the same time which meant that to differentiate themselves from each other they had to be on opposite ends of the style/aesthetic spectrum

dark v light
silver v gold
etc
