There's a lot of conversation going on about @RawFury's publishing contract, and that's awesome! I've known them for a long time, and they have always been at the forefront of developer-first publishing and transparency.
I can't speak enough good about @jantonsson, @jtoresson, @HeyDmart and the whole @RawFury team -- I've had the privilege of seeing them grow and do some incredible things. I'm grateful they do what they do and are so open with how they do it.
It's important to remember that publishing is a business, just like game development. As developers, we have to look out for our own interests, and a publisher has to look out for theirs -- the negotiation is where we try to find a balance.
It's also worth noting that the contract is one crucial part of a publishing agreement, a 'worst-case scenario' assurance, but your relationship with a publisher is equally important. It's what you'll deal with every day.
If you can't have difficult discussions with a potential partner, you'll never know how they deal with conflict or push-back. This is something you ABSOLUTELY need to understand before you enter into any partnership, and something they should understand about you as well.
Take the time to negotiate, DEFINITELY get a lawyer to work with you on the contract, but remember that you're dealing with humans and make sure to build a strong, honest relationship with them. Both of these things have to go well for a publishing deal to succeed!
