Gov. Sununu to @jordynhaime on COVID measures:

"If your argument is that states that have more restrictions have lower COVID, that is absolutely not true."

Worth noting: That's also what he said about mask mandates on Nov 12. A week later, he did a mask mandate. #nhpolitics
Here are the transcripts.

On left, what Sununu said about mask mandates on Nov 12. (He announced NH's mandate Nov 19).

On right, what Sununu said about more restrictions today.

The phrasing is very similar.

#nhpolitics
I bring this up not to push one policy or another. This is all really nuanced, and to be fair, Sununu's answers have been nuanced too.

But I've noticed when the governor is asked if we're getting more COVID restrictions, he has a preferred approach:

#nhpolitics
1) He says that all options are on the table.

2) He attacks at length the notion that that particular restriction is the solution, pointing to states w/ high case # s despite that policy.

3) Later, he announces NH will be adopting that policy. #nhpolitics
The result is that it can be difficult for reporters, and the public, to read the tea leaves.

One week he might criticize an approach; the next week, he might adopt it.

I've asked him in the past for "triggers," à la de Blasio's 3%, but he generally avoids those.

#nhpolitics
I imagine this dynamic is confounding both for people who want restrictions and those oppose them. It's just hard to get a read.

And it's the result of the unique politics of this virus, this state, and this governor. Whose popularity, I should note, is very high. #nhpolitics
So...to follow @jordynhaime 's original question, is NH going to see some of the restrictions of our neighboring states in coming weeks? It looks like we aren't right now.

Unless?
