For the alleged most intelligent life form on this planet we are pretty bloody stupid. We are killing this planet, with almost everything we do, yet, if it means changing even the smallest part of our way of life we choose not to. https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16384-billions-could-go-hungry-from-global-warming-by-2100/#ixzz6hNvnFsiP
All the science is telling us, that within the next century many parts of this planet will become uninhabitable, with crop failures and water scarcity, billions will have a choice of moving to a different country or dying of starvation or heat. https://science.sciencemag.org/content/323/5911/240
Transport, is of course another huge driver of climate catastrophe. Sadly even if all vehicles went electric tomorrow, it would not solve the problem. They need power to run, power which has to be produced, currently largely from fossil fuels. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/nov/25/are-electric-vehicles-really-so-climate-friendly
Industry, is another massive contributor to the enormous emissions which are causing the problem. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2011/apr/28/industries-sectors-carbon-emissions
So let's recycle that has got to help hasn't it?
Very little of what we, the consumer, puts into our recycling bins actually gets recycled https://www.livescience.com/how-much-plastic-recycling.html
Very little of what we, the consumer, puts into our recycling bins actually gets recycled https://www.livescience.com/how-much-plastic-recycling.html
A lot of the plastic used isn't even recyclable in any case. https://www.johnston.biz/which_plastics_are_recyclable/
Negative emission technologies, they have got to sort it haven't they? Technology sorts everything. Actually technology is part of the problem and NETs are not really going to work. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/aug/01/negative-emissions-tech-climate-emergency-carbon-dioxide-emissions
So what is wrong with technology? It uses an enormous amount of power, power which is, to a large extent generated from fossil fuels. https://www.rt.com/sport/506960-cristiano-ronaldo-instagram-energy/
Even if we become a world where only renewable energy is used, it doesn't really mean we will have solved the problem. https://www.ucsusa.org/resources/environmental-impacts-renewable-energy-technologies
The Paris accords, were celebrated five years ago as a huge hope for the future, sadly they have turned out to be nothing but hot air, empty promises, which no one had any real intention to work towards. Sadly it appears no one has. https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/12/paris-climate-pact-5-years-old-it-working
What about carbon offset? What about it, another futile and weak idea which is actually both unquantifiable and doesn't really work https://friendsoftheearth.uk/climate/does-carbon-offsetting-work
So, can we actually do anything about climate catastrophe? Of course there are lots of things we can do, one thing we most definitely are unable to do is rely on governments, corporations or others. We have to do it ourselves, it is up to each and every one of us to act.
What we all have to do is stop consuming in such vast quantities, reduce, reuse, change our habits, buy only what we need. Stop traveling by plane. Don't buy the latest biggest of anything, what you already have works just fine.
Work locally or at home as much as we all can, this pandemic, may yet prove to have a few positive impacts in these areas. We have reached a crossroads, and have both an individual and collective decision to make.
Do we want to survive as a species, or not? Because there is little doubt that unless we change how we live, immediately and drastically, we are condemning our children and grandchildren to a much harsher life than we have enjoyed.
Moreover, our great grandchildren may not even be here at all. Nor will any of the other beautiful flora and fauna which currently share this world with us.
Both plants and animals are already being affected by climate catastrophe. Can they adapt quickly enough to survive? https://www.advancedsciencenews.com/nature-can-adjust-to-a-new-climate-though-perhaps-not-fast-enough/
There is something very simple we can all do to try to change this trajectory. Move to a plant based diet. Animal agriculture is the leading driver of climate catastrophe. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/may/31/avoiding-meat-and-dairy-is-single-biggest-way-to-reduce-your-impact-on-earth
