This is close to how I feel about gender.
I am happy to respect pronouns - so long as that is what it is, a form of civility and kindness. When pronouns become “this is what one IS”, I begin to feel coerced into accepting something that makes no sense to me. https://twitter.com/aella_girl/status/1341221889725800448

“Gender discourse” is a space I avoid more than I would like (especially as it’s directly related to women’s rights, liberalism), because it is the space I feel:
1) most explicitly policed from others and
2) most obliged to self-censor, so as not to hurt others.

I’m actually pretty well-read on this, despite my cagey-ness and hesitancy in engagement.
In private discussions, many public figures/academics have told me they will never touch this subject because it is so deeply toxic.
I can’t imagine this will lead anywhere good. https://twitter.com/humat0n/status/1341516602215452679

Moreso than other culture war topics, this one is deeply fascinating from a hundred different dimensions (biology, philosophy, civil liberties etc etc), and ultimately has *many* and varied consequences for society (were we to accept one way of thinking over another).
And yet!
What should be an enormously interesting and uniquely modern discussion is actually composed of too-online agitators warring amongst each other, while anyone sane or nuanced dipping in a toe gets eaten alive.
What a shame for us all.
