There's a military aristocracy in the US, a dynamic I wasn't aware of until earning a commission my 11th year of service. Started working with Infantry officers in '98 who were 3rd generation, frequently with Generals as fathers and grandfathers, married to General's daughters...
..That whole subculture runs deeps in the military. Looks out for its own. It's the same cultural dynamic the USSR maintained, a military "class" that was separate and different from general society. A military caste is exactly what America's founding fathers didn't want...
..and for good reason. Met some great West Pointers, met far more mediocre ones. For every person I met who got "the kind of education my parents could never have dreamed of affording" there were probably 3 beneficiaries of nepotism who rode in on family connections...
..I'll point out that if you're in the business of producing military officers and you can't be bothered with integrity then hang it up, it's pointless. We're all witnessing the logical outcome of institutional shoulder shrugs regarding ethics and morality. Put up or shut down.
