Several things happened during last night's Council meeting that I believe require a response. First and foremost, the racial slur that was used by a public speaker was abhorrent, and I condemn it in the strongest possible way. #a2council 1/6
There is no place for such disgusting racism in our community. Indeed, there should be no place for it anywhere. Second, I am disturbed that three of my colleagues tried to silence a public speaker who made comments critical of a council member. 2/6
As public officials, we should expect to be criticized by the public when they don't agree with our statements or actions. Attempts to censor criticism of ourselves would violate the First Amendment, in my view, and I would strongly oppose any such attempt. 3/6
Further, some council members have insisted that public speakers at the beginning of the meeting must speak to an issue on the agenda. According to the Council Rules, speakers are simply given priority if addressing an item on the agenda. It is not mandatory. 4/6
Finally, I apologize to all Ann Arbor residents that Council once again conducted business after 11 p.m., when most people go to bed. Last night, we adjourned close to 1 a.m. In my view, it is undemocratic to conduct the people's business in the middle of the night. 5/6
I am working to end that practice, which has unfortunately become an accepted way of doing business here. To me, it's unacceptable. As always, I thank you for the opportunity to serve you. Please reach out to me with any concerns you have. 6/6
