Destigmatise Indigenous anger.
Living in a colonized world, we have every right to be angry when we see fit. Not only as a community, but as individuals as well.
Referring to Indigenous anger as “cancel culture” or an “extreme” or “violent” action is an act of neocolonialism.
It insinuates that we are not untitled to our emotions. It steals the autonomy from us as full-fledged emotional beings. We can only be “Good, Kind, Compassionate” Indians, or else our feelings have no merit.
And furthermore, suggesting that Indigenous anger is violent or extreme perpetuates the Savage Indian trope; it implies that we are uncivil creatures who cannot control our emotions.
