i’m not one to push my political opinions on anyone, but i’ve been reading up on history and there’s an undeniable correlation between the ‘fall of spirituality’ and the ‘rise of capitalism’ through the world. capitalism puts a *huge* emphasis on the material and physical.
capitalism exploits people and harms the environment. modern capitalism causes deep suffering everywhere. and because everyone is so focused on working and making money, there’s nearly no room for studying on one’s own time or even thinking about existentialism anymore.
historically speaking, spirituality used to be a huge part of every cultures daily life. even in europe, before the renaissance, spirituality was very important to the people. capitalism spread throughout europe and then throughout the rest of the world.
the fall of spirituality had 3 stages: separation from the divine, separation from the self and others, and separation from nature. capitalism meets all these marks as well causing deep materialism, lack of empathy, and destruction of the environment.
if you want some sources that explain more in depth, read pages 2-5 labeled ‘the bankruptcy of our age’ from this pdf. it talks about the fall of spirituality throughout history. http://www.globalmissiology.org/english/docs_pdf/rosado_what_is_spirituality_4_2008.pdf
you can also watch this 11 minute youtube video that explains the rise of capitalism throughout history. you can see the correlation between this video and the pdf by using the da two mentioned.
