CHILDCARE =INFRASTRUCTURE And yet, “About 56% of child-care providers report losing money by staying open... 42%... say they have taken on debt using personal credit cards to pay for supplies and other items.” (Short thread) https://twitter.com/sassermodestino/status/1341453014805180418
My dad worked for the state of NV for ~20 years, building roads. He had his share of complaints, but they never made him buy his own asphalt or survey equipment. And yet, those roads were no more important to the economy than childcare is to us today.
The days of families surviving on one income are long gone, and yet we still have this idea that childcare is not essential to the economy. Even if you don’t care about women’s agency (I know many don’t), you should care about our collective wealth and prosperity.
With 1 in 4 women considering leaving the workforce, we are facing a huge loss of productivity as a society. Not supporting the childcare industry is going to make this so much worse. Why? It doesn’t have to be this way. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/10/women-work-gender-equality-covid19/
