Yoshihiro Togashi’s “Hunter X Hunter” is the greatest thing I’ve ever experienced. The characters have rich characterisation and have their own ideas associated with them; Revenge and hatred with Kurapika Kurta, self-worth and purpose with Killua Zoldyck and Pouf, hypocrisy and +
+ morality with Gon Freecss,Identity and Fate with Chrollo Lucilfer, Leadership with Meruem, the duality of humanity with Isaac Netero, While Hisoka might not have any interesting themes associated with him he is very important for balancing the tone to not make the series too +
dark. He serves as a chaos factor for the series and that’s why some may consider him as a 5th protagonist. He doesn’t need to be deep, what he adds to the series with his simplicity is fantastic and made my experience even better.
The arcs have a ton of variety, changing the themes, setting and tone in each arc to not the plot stale and boring. It goes from a happy action adventure and tournament show, to a dark crime-thriller, to a small scale war, then to an arc about politics.
The chimera ant arc is definitely one of the best arcs in the series, and my personal favourite in all of AniManga. It starts off nicely introducing the chimera ants and showing how much of a threat they pose with how they quickly learn how to use nen adding lots of tension.
Everything before the Palace Invasion sub-arc is necessary to pay off in the end. The last 25 episodes of this arc are my favourite in fiction. It’s a dark social commentary on how humans will always be at the top of the food chain, humans’ real threat is themselves, we’re +
greedy, self-serving, we’re cruel and terrible - the Rose bomb. At first we think that the ants are humanity’s biggest threat but then we learn that even in a fictional series the biggest threat to humanity, is humanity itself - recontextualizing the world of HxH. But at the end+
+despite all the terrible things that we’ve seen, we get a beautiful ending about love and connection with Komugi and Meruem’s dynamic. And there’s also Gon and Meruem, with Gon we get to see more of his dark and monstrous side, that was foreshadowed in the earlier arcs +
+ and with Meruem we see his progression from a terrible and cruel monster to a creature capable of kindness. And there’s Isaac Netero, who represents the both sides of humanity. There’s an insane amount of duality in this arc which makes it my favourite.
In the end, all the themes come together with Ging’s philosophy of enjoying all the detours, because that’s where you’ll find things to be more important than your destination.
Problems include Nanika’s poor introduction and the show is very slightly inconsistent - the middle section where Gon and Killua separate and fight off the ants. Those episodes were still solid but they don’t compare to the rest of the series at all and they were a bit of a drop+
+ in quality. Greed Island has some boring parts tho I can’t remember the specifics due to not having seen the show in over a year. Nanika is good overall with very nice qualities - introduces us to the dark continent, pays off Killua’s character arc and deepens the Zoldyck +
however she is definitely an asspull that didn’t have any foreshadowing. She just came out of nowhere. Still, even with all these flaws I can still be proud to call it my favorite work of fiction and rate it a 12/10.
Kinda corny but whatever
