Q: Many people especially non vegerarians question non violence as per jain Dharma. They say jains eat plants, take breath etc that's also violence.

A: In this thread, I'll clear their doubt.
For this, I need to specify some words used in jain Philosophy which r as below

1/n
1. Worldly living beings r of 2 types- Tras and Sthavar

Tras means living beings with 2 to 5 senses
Sthavar means living beings with only one touch sense.

2. There r 10 prans (life power) - they r 5 senses, 3 power (thought, speech and body), breathing and age (life span)

2/n
Plants r sthavar living beings only and have only 4 pran (1 touch sense, body, breathing and age).

Lesser the pran, lesser the violence.

Though violence is there in eating plants but it is least of all other violences that occur on eating living beings with 2 to 5 senses.

3/n
All know it's impossible even to stand without eating something. So jains go for plants based diet.

Now people may question - it means jain Philosophy doesn't advocate for absolute non violence.

It's not so.

4/n
It advocates for total non violence. This can be achieved in a gradual manner only.

BUT HOW???

Anybody who knows a bit about jain Philosophy, knows that every living being is an intangible soul attached to a tangible body.

Soul doesn't require food or breathing but

5/n
body requires them.

Due to requirements of body, we in worldly life, r unable to abstain from violence completely.

Jain Philosophy describes how to get rid of body i.e. liberation. This can be done by destroying all our karmas that r attached to soul.

6/n
For this purpose, a person becomes jain muni, does penace so as to stop influx of new karmas and destroy old karmas. On destroying all karmas, soul is permanently detached from body i.e gets liberation.

7/n
Violence is due to presence of body only. After liberation, soul is without body so absolute non violence is attained.

This is as per jain Philosophy which many people may not have faith in.
My only objective to write this thread is to clear their doubt regarding jain doctrines.
