One of the truths young military leaders have to learn and internalise is this: your opinion on virtually anything will be ignored if you are not good at your job.

You can be factually, intellectually right and no one will listen to you if you can’t hack the basics of your job.
Professional competence is the price of admission. That’s how you earn your seat at the table. Is it fair?
Logically, no. In a perfect world arguments and answers would stand on their own. In the real world, the messenger matters to a huge degree.
People on Twitter have opinions on many issues in the military. Rightly so. It’s a thinking man’s/woman’s game. When young leaders wonder aloud why their ideas or opinions or actions aren’t taken seriously, it bears remembering that a seat at the table must be earned every day.
Have you earned your seat? Are you competent at your job? Can you employ every system your people use with reasonable proficiency? Can you think, forecast, plan and lead from the front in the worst physical and psychological conditions? It’s a question only you alone can answer.
Essentially, have you earned the right to be taken seriously? Or are you just the “Christmas help” until an officer they can believe in replaces you?
