People mocked Turin's VAL 208 as feeling like an horizontal lift, because of tiny trainsets (52m * 2,08m) and stations. But the 13.2 km line carries 150k/day and costed 1,035 M€ to build (including RS). That is 6.9k$/rider, a bargain compared to most US rail transit.
And the line is far from being at capacity: with additional rolling stock it can reach 68'' headways and an hourly capacity close to 20k pphhd. Overbuilding and overpaying are two sides of the same disease: a waste of precious public money.
