Spending my last working afternoon of 2020 watching the #ContinuityBill debate in @ScotParl - hoping to see all MSPs voting for nature today and strengthening this vital legislation
Fantastic that MSPs voted to add a 'purpose' to the 'keeping pace powers', including to maintain or advance environmental standards where possible when aligning with EU laws in future. This is great news for nature and is supported by @RSPBScotland @ScotLINK
More great news that MSPs have voted to strengthen the duties on the 5 EU environmental principles. This is vital for ensuring the principles are properly considered in creation of policy. Thanks @strathearnrose and @fincarson for working to improve the Bill in this way
Excellent and powerful points by @claudiabeamish on why Environment Standards Scotland must be able to use its enforcement powers in relation to individual decisions - we must not allow citizen rights to be eroded
Really disappointing that MSPs have chosen not to vote for nature and give the new watchdog Environmental Standards Scotland the teeth it needs. This is bad news for Scotland's nature and citizens.
Ending on a positive note with excellent amendments from @markruskell and @claudiabeamish passed to give ESS sufficient funding and to put the environment strategy in law, putting Scotland in a better place for tackling the twin nature and climate emergency
Overall really great to see such strong cross-party working on this Bill which has resulted in a lot of positive improvements for nature. Particular shout outs to @markruskell @claudiabeamish @Liam4Orkney @MspLiz @fincarson @strathearnrose @AConstanceSNP
We @RSPBScotland @ScotLINK will be disappointed that MSPs and government didn't choose to create a more robust environmental watchdog but will be looking forward to submitting our views on how environmental governance can be strengthened in the forthcoming consultation
