My problems with MHA: A painful yet necessary thread. I love this series but some stuff just ain't it. Gil gonna have a field day with this
Keeping engagement throughout arcs. Some parts of arcs like: 1A vs Teachers, Provisional License, Overhaul and Joint Training just are not engaging or remotely enjoyable. Let's start with 1A vs Teachers. The only narrative we care about this is Deku and Bakugo vs All Might and+
Todoroki and Momo vs Aizawa. The rest (whilst midly entertaining) haven't been built up to enough and to have this arc be more sound Hori should've built up more of 1As narratives and individuals, charisma can only get these characters so far. Maybe some more personal conflict+
For Tokoyami and Tsuyu, them having their own sound arcs in this such as learning what they're like as characters and what inspires them to continue as heroes. 7/10
And I just do not like the Provisional License arc, it really is boring and the only parts I like is the "The Crush of UA" plus Shoto and Inasa against Gang Orca. It has poor pacing, bad character moments, not enough stakes and I do not give two shits about the other schools.6/10
Overhaul, whilst being one of the better MHA arcs (8/10) doesn't hit me in some ways, the invasion of the hideout had good character moments but I just feel nothing for most of these characters and there wasn't the stakes I wish there was to keep the tension of the first big arc
Of MHA. It's just not an extremely engaging arc, I do love Kirishima's, Mirio's, Amajiki's and Mirio's moments in this arc however. But the pacing in Overhaul is quite questionable and one of the main things, IMO, Horikoshi struggles with since his pacing is overall... good but
In some arcs the pacing is really quite questionable and I think that's where PL War, cuts short.
Another thing I dislike is the claustrophobic panelling Horikoshi does, honestly this manga needs to have some BREATHING ROOM, there is so many different panels, text and speech bubbles on every page and it is a chore sometimes.
And now a more obvious issue is that Horikoshi cannot end arcs very well and or transition into new ones well. The exception being the MVA-Endeavor Agency-PL War stretch. This is prevalent in Stain-1A vs Teachers arc, actually terrible transition, and Overhaul to Gentle Criminal+
Was such a weird tone shift and Horikoshi needs to work on tone shifts a lot. And of course, the end of PL War had so much shit happening in the last 5 chapters and this has never been an issue to Horikoshi and honestly, I think his new editor forced this to happen because Hori
Has always been good at making sure not a lot of shit happens at once. Now the characters and plot I have WAYYY fewer gripes with because Horikoshi uses most characters pretty decently, however the female cast is.... to say the least.... not very good, he writes extremely +
Competent male characters (Deku, Shigaraki, Endeavor etc) but other than Toga and maybe Momo, his female writing sort of decreases in quality. And the big thing lacking in thie Superhero manga is the action, it has very.... shaky choreography, and as much as Horkoshi is
Great at using quirks creatively and well, his choreography is... lack luster...and sometimes I do not know what is going on in action panels, which I think is a very compromising issue in a BATTLE shonen. However I get the gist most of the time so it's not a huge deal for me.
Overall Horikoshi's build up to characters and their backstories/motivations are very good but some people I give NO SHITS about, like mainly the LoV, now the core members, I haven't got an issue with but the members previous I jsut didn't care about their fights at all
Especially at the summer training camp arc. Hori misses opportunities to delve deeper into how characters are feeling and he doesn't focus on a character for too long which I think, especially in the Toya reveal, was needed; especially an inner look on where endeavors at
Overall, MHA a 9/10
