A thread for those wanting to get started with slime moulds. Now is a good time of year to make a slimarium for growing slime moulds. Many common and interesting species will pop up from bark samples and you can view them without going outside..
Collect samples of bark from interesting niches. Slime moulds feed on bacteria so think where they might like to be foraging: rot holes, where litter accumulate, invert frass, water/sap tracks..
Lay out samples not touching on kitchen paper in an airtight box, wet the paper with cooled boiled water and put the lid on. Keep at room temperature..
I made this one to using samples from wet woodland at Smockmill Common, Norfolk. I’ll add spp to this thread as they pop up over the next month or so...
So by now you’ve set up your #Silmarium with foraged bits of bark. Sit back and relax with a brandy & mince pie and watch the beauties grow. Not quite. There is curation to do..
