Have you ever thought about the morality/constitutionality of government forcing a citizen to inform the District Magistrate of their decision (or intention) to follow a different religion? This is what the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion does. 1/7
People have all kinds of beliefs—Religious (God. Allah. Ram. No god etc). Political (Communist, BJP, Congress, etc). Best actor (Amol Palekar, Amitabh, Rajni, etc). Why does govt want to know what god I believe in but not the party I support or football team I think is best? 2/7
Will it be constitutional for @myogiadityanath or Modi to pass a law that before someone joins a political party or switches to another (like Suvendu Adhikari), they must first inform the DM who must be satisfied this decision has not been coerced (eg threat of Narada probe)? 3/7
If Rita Bahuguna Joshi decides to leave Hinduism and become a Bahai, why must she tell the DM something that is so personal to her? When she left the Congress to join the BJP, she had to tell no one, even though, arguably, that decision affected others and not just herself. 4/7
“Why should any human being be asked to disclose what's his religion? Why should [he] be made to inform the authorities that he is changing his belief? What right does the State have to direct convertees to give the DM notice in advance about changing his rebellious thought?” 6/7
The HC struck down that part of the HP anti-conversion law as ultra vires. Now Uttar Pradesh has gone and enacted the same illegal provision. The Supreme Court must put a stop to this invasion of privacy. 7/7
