Everything the “Q-slur” crowd says about why we shouldn’t use the word “queer” can also be said about “gay”. Gay is just as much a slur as queer is. It has the same history of abuse. Moreso, for this generation, because they’ll have ACTUALLY heard people use it as a slur.
Personally, I’d much rather be called queer, because I grew up in the late 90s and early 00s. No one around me was calling people “queer” with a scowl. You know what they WERE saying? “That’s so gay.” “Don’t be gay, dude.” For anything they didn’t like.
At least queer (I’d much rather be called queer, because I grew up in the late 90s and early 00s. No one around me was calling people “queer” with a scowl. You know what they WERE saying? “That’s so gay.” “Don’t be gay, dude.”
Gay typically meant “weird” or “outcast” or just “feminine (derogatory),” but also stupid, lame, boring, whatever the Youths felt like complaining about that day. I am sick of hearing things called “gay.”
I never heard anyone call anything queer unless they were way too old to be talking to teenage me. And neither did most of the people complaining about reclamation. They’re just parroting the talking points slowly slipped into the community by who else? The TERFs.
Because it always does come back to the fucking TERFs.
TL;DR young people think we can’t reclaim the word Queer because TERFs told them not to, whereas I have a visceral instinctive cringe reaction whenever someone calls something gay but you don’t see me complaining about other people’s labels.
TW: slurs
Slur discourse in general is really weird because if you think we weren’t all calling each other Faggots and Dykes then you either have never taken a queer history course or have never seen RENT and either way I feel bad for you.

Like, I get the trigger warning. Some people don’t want to use them personally and don’t like them and get upset seeing them and that is FINE there’s nothing wrong with that leave those people alone. But don’t tell me and my queer friends what we can call ourselves
(Side note: using any of those words as an insult is NOT reclamation even if you are the absolute perfect definition of them. Do not use slurs on other people against their will. Shut up. )
I see the error/double post and I am MORTIFIED but I can’t delete it without breaking the thread. Basically originally I had another part that I deleted and rearranged and I didn’t put it back together properly
This isn’t super busy but it did pick up ALL AT ONCE and I will never get anything done if I don’t mute it lol sorry
Hey y’all a couple of people have pointed out that usage of queer as a slur in the 90s and 00s was different for them, so it’s probably a regional thing. No one where I lived said it, they might have where you did! The rest of my point still stands but it’s not entirely outdated.
